Saadat Hasan Manto

Saadat Hasan Manto (1912-1955) was a Muslim, South Asian writer who primarily wrote in Urdu. He grew up in Amritsar in India in a period of political unrest. He became interested in literature and translated many classics into Urdu and later began writing his own stories. He worked as a journalist for several years both in Lahore and in Delhi where he wrote radio plays for All India Radio as well as stories and essays. His early works showed leftist and socialist ideas, and his later works portrayed the darker sides of the human psyche as they appeared during the Partition.
